Samsung F490

 samsungf490

The F490 is a touchscreen phone using Samsung’s Croix user interface that first appeared in the Samsung Armani. We liked the Armani, but the trouble with the Armani is that it’s just too small for a touchscreen phone. If you’re relying on the screen to control everything from making calls to writing texts, then you want the screen to be big - like the iPhone at 3.5" or the Viewty at 3". The Armani’s screen is just 2.6". The F490 has a 3.2 inch screen, and this makes all the difference. It’s a much easier phone to use than the pocket-sized Armani, although text addicts please note that that texting on a touchscreen phone is never going to be as fast as on a conventional keypad. The screen has a 16:9 widescreen format when turned sideways, so is perfect for watching videos & movies too.

Samsung F210

The F210 is a great phone concept. It’s a phone/music player/camera in a tiny lightweight package. Weighting just 72g, it’s fantastically light and it’s so compact you risk losing it in your handbag! The secret to its tiny size is the swivel design. As you can see from the photo, when closed the F210 resembles an iPod Nano, with an LCD screen and metal jog dial showing. With the jog dial and side volume controls you can access the music functions even with the phone closed. When you want to make a call, you flick the phone and it spins open to reveal a full keypad. We’re delighted to see that the keypad has a regular 3-column layout, unlike the F210’s predecessor, the X830, which had a 2-column layout and was harder to use. It’s narrower than typical phones, but the keys are a good size and pose no problems. Overall it’s a really nice phone to use. The user interface changes depending on whether the phone is open or closed to display phone menus or music menus. The styling is gorgeous with the metallic edging and jog dial, and the use of specially-designed stunning screen graphics. If you want to, you can hang the phone around your neck, with the "lanyard", a kind of one-piece necklace that also holds your earphones.

Samsung F480

On the face of it, these are two very similar phones. They both have a touchscreen user interface using the "award-winning" Croix UI, with haptics (vibration) for tactile feedback. Both are good looking phones - the F480 has a brushed metal finish and is supplied with a leather case to help protect it from scratches. The F480 has a conventional QVGA resolution screen instead of the extra long screen used by the F490. Losing screen resolution is bad news for touchscreen phones, and the Tocco’s screen is just 2.8 inches (the F490 has a 3.2 inch screen.) Both are ultraslim phones, with the F480 being a tiny bit thinner at an incredible 11.6mm.

LG KF700

LG boast that the KF700 is the world’s first phone with three separate input methods. Don’t think so! Whilst it’s true that the KF700 does have three input methods (touchscreen, alphanumeric keypad and shortcuts), it’s not the first (this was probably the Sony Ericsson P800 back in 2003!) Anyway, let’s take a look at the three input methods and see how well they work. Firstly, the Viewty has proved that a touchscreen user interface can work well for everything except texting. The KF700 clearly builds on the Viewty’s success, delivering a polished touchscreen UI with the benefit of a conventional keypad for fast texting. When sending texts, you can use the keypad for entering letters, with frequently used symbols available on the touchscreen. It’s a strong combination and should please most people. The touchscreen is big (at 3 inches diagonally), which is essential for making a user friendly UI. The shortcut dial isn’t a huge innovation, but provides a quick way into various applications.

LG KF510

It’s an ultra-slim slide phone with a sleek touchscreen design. The colour scheme is gorgeous, with a two-tone graded finish in either Sunset Red or Stardust Dark Grey. When you move your fingers over the touch-sensitive surface of the phone, LED lights blink on and off. It’s quite hypnotic, or at least we thought so. Maybe LG have hypnotised us into writing such a good review! Oh, nearly forgot to mention that it’s quite a heavy phone, despite being so thin, as its body is made of metal. This will give it strength, and combined with the scratch-proof tempered glass screen, it should be a pretty robust phone despite its superslim design.

Nokia E65

 nokiae65

It’s a very nicely-sized phone and not too heavy, although we’d have preferred a slightly larger keypad - what is it with Nokia and small keypads? The slide design is practical as well as smart, as it enables a large screen to be fitted to a compact phone. The screen is one of the nicest features of the E65, using Nokia’s latest 16 million colour technology and a high resolution. However, the E65 does use very small fonts, so be wary of this if your close-up eyesight isn’t what it used to be! On the other hand, it enables you to view a lot of information on the screen at one time.

Nokia 6110 Navigator

 6110

The 6110 is a nicely finished slide phone that’s more compact than its big brother, the N95, but surprisingly a little heavier. It’s definitely a lot more refined than the N95 in the looks department, and we prefer the keypad too, even though the top row of keys are slightly awkward to access if you have large fingers. There are dedicated keys for the Navigator (GPS), the camera, a Symbian application launcher key, and a customisable "My Own" key. As well as a rear-facing video camera, there’s a front -facing main camera with a sliding lens protector. The first impressions are very much of a phone that has been carefully thought out and is both nice to look at and nice to hold.

Nokia N73

n73

The Nokia N73 updates the Nokia N70 3G SmartPhone. The N73 is a lot thinner than the N70 and weighs less as well, making it one of the lightest smartphones. It has a conventional boxy design with a regular keypad very similar to the N70. The keys are a little too small for large fingers to use easily and the joystick can be fiddly too. The display is very large with an amazing 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 262,000 colours. Its one of the best displays on any smartphone.

Nokia E51

 e51

Nokia E51 is available in a choice of three colours - black, silver and pink - although the front face of the phone remains black, with just the edge and back changing colour. Design-wise, this is a no-nonsense easy-to-use phone, with a classic shape, a nice conventional keypad and a 5-way navigation key for easy scrolling and selection. There are also some handy shortcut buttons for email, calendar, contacts and the active standby screen. On the right side is a mute key next to the volume keys. On the left side you’ll find a Push to Talk key and a voice recorder key. An LED indicator is used to notify you of new email and messages, as well as missed calls. It’s a nice-sized phone too, and very slim, at just 12mm. First impressions are excellent - the E51 looks and feels like a quality device.
